Questions

Questions people ask before they try it

What it reads, what it produces, who checks the result, and what happens to your files. If something you need to know is not here, the answer is usually one accepted manuscript away.

Common questions

What do I upload?

The Word document your editor accepted, as it arrived. It does not need to be cleaned up, re-styled or put into a template first - that preparation is the work this removes. A PDF is not enough on its own: it is a picture of a page rather than the text and its structure, and reading an article back out of one is not something this does yet.

What comes out at the end?

A print-ready PDF galley set in your journal’s own design, an online version for the web, archive-ready XML for indexes and abstracting services, the deposit that registers the DOI, and a Word copy that matches the printed galley for the times somebody needs to change one word by hand.

Does it replace my editors?

No, and it is not meant to. The software reads the manuscript and works out its structure; a person checks that structure and approves it. Nothing reaches a galley or a deposit that an editor has not seen. The time saved is the retyping, not the judgement.

Will the galley look like our journal?

Yes. Each journal keeps its own page design, typeface, licence line, logos and citation style, so an article set here is indistinguishable from one set by your previous typesetter - because it is set to the same specification.

How do authors see their proofs?

You send a private link that expires. The author opens the typeset article as it will be published, reads it, and leaves comments in place. Those comments come back to the editor against the part of the article they refer to, rather than as an email thread to reconcile.

Can we publish several journals from one account?

Yes. One publisher account can hold as many journals as you run, each with its own design, imprint and team. Staff see only the journals they have been given.

Is our work visible to other publishers?

No. Each publisher’s journals, manuscripts and files are separated from every other publisher’s, two-factor sign-in can be required for your whole team, and every action anyone takes is recorded.

How do we try it?

You tell us about the journal and send one accepted manuscript. We set the account up for you - there is no sign-up form, because a publisher account carries your journals, their identifiers and their licence, and none of that comes out of an email address. Then you put that paper through from upload to galley. That is the whole of the evaluation: the part that is yours to do is reading the galley and saying whether you would publish it.

If the question is which files you get and what each one is for, that has a page of its own.

Next step

The rest is answered by trying it.

Tell us about your journal and send one accepted manuscript with it. We set the account up and you put that paper through from upload to galley. Reading the galley is the whole of the evaluation, and it is the only part that is yours to do.
